Cultural diplomacy of the USSR and Iran in the mid-20th century: A. Burak and M. Farshchan

Authors: Kurumchina Anna Edkhemovna, PhD of Philosophy, Associate Professor, Ural Federal University, Yekaterinburg (Russia)

Keywords: Iranian cultural diplomacy; Soviet cultural diplomacy; A. Burak; M. Farshchian; international cultural dialogue.

During the emergence of a multipolar world, the role of regional cultural figures, including artists, in cultural diplomacy is growing. Historical cases of cultural diplomacy in Iran and the USSR during the bipolar world provide an example of how regional artists influence the understanding of national culture at the international level and contribute to the development of intercultural dialogue. The aim of this study is to examine the cases of two artists: Soviet Ural artist Alexander Burak and Iranian artist Mahmoud Farshchyan, as examples of cultural diplomacy that have maintained international dialogue. This article uses a historical method to analyze cultural diplomacy practices, identifying the specific features of the work of A. Burak and M. Farshchyan and their role in the development of international cultural cooperation. The article offers a novel analysis of the role of regional artists from Iran and the USSR from the 1960s to the 1980s in the development of international cultural cooperation. This is also the first time in Russian-language academic literature that a cultural analysis of M. Farshchyan's work has been provided, along with new literature on his work. The study establishes that the role of regional artists in the development of international cultural cooperation occupies a prominent place and deserves greater attention from government agencies when seeking new talent to represent the country internationally and expand the repertoire of cultural diplomacy practices.
