Screen culture in the post-television era: a contemporary reading of classical media theory

Authors: Alibeyli Elchin Vidadi, DSc of Philosophy in Art Studies, Baku-TV LLC, author-host, Baku (Azerbaijan)

Keywords: Umberto Eco; new media ecosystem; platform culture; screen culture; media semiotics; algorithmic visibility; audience transformation.

This article, drawing on a comparative analysis of classical television theory and contemporary platform media, examines the transformation of screen culture from 2020 to 2025. While traditionally characterized as a radical break with previous forms of communication, it also proposes a model of cultural and semiotic continuity in which the screen's core functions are preserved, while their mechanisms become more complex and less visible. Drawing on Umberto Eco's criticism of television, concepts such as pseudo-realism, audience passivity, screen ritual, and the illusion of choice are examined, reimagined in algorithmically controlled media environments. According to Eco, television is more a means of cultural normalization and semantic superficiality than a mechanism of totalitarian propaganda. Viewers do not feel subject to television's ideological influence, as this influence becomes part of everyday experience under the guise of entertainment, entertainment, and information. Using a qualitative and interpretive methodology grounded in semiotic analysis, hermeneutics, and comparative media studies, this article explores the logic of platforms, the attention economy, influence culture, and algorithmic visibility. It is determined that, despite increased interactivity and user participation, contemporary platform media reproduce new forms of symbolic power and behavioral normalization. It is concluded that classical television theory remains relevant for understanding the cultural mechanisms of digital platforms, and a theoretical framework linking television and new media studies is proposed. It is revealed that the transition from a television-centered model of mass communication to a platform-based, algorithmically driven new media ecosystem is not only a technological change but also a restructuring of cultural consciousness, social practices, and identification mechanisms.
