Henry George's Theory of Social Justice

Authors: Nesterov Gleb Eduardovich, Postgraduate student, Department of History of Political Philosophy, Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow

Keywords: Henry George; single tax; social justice; land rent; natural law; welfare state; private property.

This article reconstructs the concept of justice articulated by Henry George (1839-1897), an American philosopher, economist, and social thinker, who developed a distinctive politico-philosophical doctrine grounded in economic, moral, and religious principles. The analysis focuses on George's critique of rent as an institutionalized form of private ownership over natural resources and his proposal of the "single tax" as a mechanism for addressing the structural roots of social inequality. Justice, in George's view, is not a matter of redistribution or political compromise, but a reintegration of ethics and economics based on adherence to a universal natural law disrupted by rent-based monopolization. His theory is interpreted in relation to the tradition of natural law and within the broader context of social and religious reform movements. The article argues that Georgism presents an original model of institutional justice, one that seeks to restructure the foundations of the social order while remaining compatible with market economies – and highly relevant in the context of contemporary rentier capitalism.
