[1] (The Ground of the Image).

Introduction to the translated version. Jean-Luc Nancy's "L'image-le distinct" was first published in the exhibition catalogues of the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf (1999) and the Tate Liverpool (2000) in German and English. A year later, "L'image-le distinct" appeared in the French edition of "La Part de l'oeil" (no. 17-18). In 2005, it was published together with other scholarly essays, including "The Forbidden Image" and "The Uncanny Landscape", as well as "Image and Violence", under the cover of the collection "The Ground of the Image" [1].

Images are the breeding ground of the imagination, and as a result, a factor in the development and transformation of the world, when ideas and dreams of upcoming changes are embodied in something that can be seen and touched. Under the pressure of the image, the forms of things and their purpose change, which makes the visual-acoustic more powerful and commanding, and art - a reflection of the intense work on the search for new images, which will subsequently be implanted into the "social fabric" as active mechanisms. One of these mechanisms has become the Internet, allowing images to capture attention faster and more effectively, confidently changing the perception of depth, volume, weight, shape of things, the distance to which they are removed, and the time in which they exist. On the plane of the screen, all things are functionally frustrated and represent digital copies of themselves. Unlike things, images, which do not have any other embodiment than screen projection, are in a more advantageous position. Their abundance, speed of rotation and the force of their impact actualize the problem that Jean-Luc Nancy addresses in his essay and which opens a book dedicated to the perception of images.

In the preface to the Russian-language version, I would like to draw attention to the title of the essay. It is adapted in sound, therefore it deviates somewhat from the literal reproduction. Nancy's research objective is aimed not only at why the image excites and captures the viewer's imagination, but is also addressed to a greater extent by the nature of the image - its "distinct". In the distinct of the image, Nancy presumably invests the meaning of the instinct of a predator, captivating, seducing, tempting and using force, invading suddenly or deceitfully [2, p. 89-91], and ultimately bringing with it disorder, confusion and threat. By distinctive - as a characteristic feature of the nature of images - Nancy means dissimilarity and difference, separation and remoteness of the image from the thing. Based on this, the analysis of the mechanism and conditions of influence begins with the motive of connection with the world of the sacred, inviolable, invisible and not obvious, everything that is kept "apart from the world of things" and "at a distance" from the contemplator.

The next important motive that Nancy emphasizes is "force as a combination of energy, pressure or intensity" that allows the image to rotate and transgresse. The appeal to the concept of transgression in the sense of crossing an insurmountable boundary is intended here to reflect the intersection with the meaning of sacrifice, which makes the transition visible and turns the invisible into visible, allowing the image to be embodied.

Finally, the third motive can be imagined as a way of communicating, thanks to which the image manages to hold attention – an emotional effect. The ability to transform, associated with incorporeality, allowing a retreat from the boundaries of the possible, makes the image more impressive, resonant and intense, penetrating deeper and imprinting itself more strongly than any thing can allow itself, despite its tactility and materiality.

Nancy's essay thus raises a number of important questions about the power of the visual and provokes us to address aspects of information overload, control over human evolution and the problem of similar effects of "life on speed" in order to solve the problem: we manipulate images and images manipulate us. Culture as an epidemic of representations depends directly on the power of imagination, since all representations sooner or later find embodiment. It follows that with the advent of the era of new visibility, where images differentially capture more and more attention to themselves, imagination makes man not only powerful but also vulnerable in a world saturated with collective dreams about the components of happiness.
