The visual features of psychedelic experience in the cinema of the 1960s

Authors: Lapatin Vadim Albertovich, PhD of Philosophical sciences, Associate Professor, Pushkin Leningrad State University, Pushkin

Keywords: cinema of the 1960s; psychedelic experience; cinematic means of expression; psychedelia; altered states of consciousness; visual imagery; media.

The purpose of the study is to examine the visual features of psychedelic experience in the cinema of the 1960s. This subject is poorly reflected in the Russian scientific discourse. This circumstance explains the scientific novelty of the study. Using material from several dozen films, the author identifies the most typical features used to show the psychedelic experience: 1) the use of kaleidoscopic images and geometric patterns; 2) rhythmic montage with a predominance of very short scenes; 3) superimposition; 4) depiction of the psychedelic experience as an ecstatic release of repressed experiences. The article proves that the source of such visual imagery is the cinema avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. Later, psychedelic visual imagery penetrated into popular culture and media (video advertising, music videos). Thus, it can be concluded that nowadays psychedelic aesthetics has become a familiar part of everyday visual culture.
