"Is it safe to be around the theory of negative utilitarianism?": A review of article "The World Destruction Argument" by Simon Knutsson
Keywords: security phenomenon; the theory of negative utilitarianism; general welfare; happiness.
The article is a review of a recently published study by Sion Knutson [9] in the journal Inquiry that addresses the world destruction argument. According to this argument, negative utilitarianism implies that "if someone can kill everyone or destroy the world, then it will be her duty." Knutsson proposes to reconsider his views not only in relation to negative utilitarianism, as its most extreme form, but also in relation to traditional forms or similar theories, such as prioritarianism. To make our discussion constructive, we propose to develop it from the standpoint on which the theory of utilitarianism is built, from the standpoint of what it talks about and what it is built on, namely, by defining what "the highest universal happiness" is and its possible embodiments in the world.
