Methodological Potential of J. Waardenburg's Neo-Phenomenology for Contemporary Religious Studies

Authors: Yarullin Ruslan Faridovich, Postgraduate student, Kazan Federal University, Kazan (Russia)

Keywords: Jacques Waardenburg; neo-phenomenology of religion; methodology of religious studies; philosophy of religion; religious actor; interpretation; subjective meaning; intention; Islam.

The article examines the methodological potential of Jacques Waardenburg's neo-phenomenology for contemporary philosophy of religion and religious studies. The relevance of the topic is determined by the need to combine empirical rigor in the analysis of religious facts with attention to the meanings that these facts acquire for believers, religious authorities and communities. The purpose of the article is to clarify the extent to which Waardenburg's project can be operationalized without turning it into a closed universal method. To achieve this purpose, the paper analyzes the transition from religion as a system to religion as an interpreted practice, the actor-oriented perspective, and the problems of subjective meaning, intention, context and verification of scholarly interpretation. The methodological basis of the study includes historical analysis of religious studies, conceptual reconstruction, comparative methodology and hermeneutic analysis. The novelty of the article lies in interpreting Waardenburg's neo-phenomenology as a transitional methodology that combines phenomenological attention to meaning with hermeneutic understanding, analysis of actors and the requirement of source-based verification. As a result, the article proposes an operational model that includes identifying a religious fact, describing its context, identifying actors, reconstructing subjective meaning, analyzing intention, comparing the reconstruction with self-descriptions, verifying it through sources, correlating understanding with explanation and explicitly marking interpretive limits. The paper concludes that the value of Waardenburg's project lies not in a finished technique, but in a research framework that helps preserve the balance between the meaning of religious life and scholarly verifiability.
