Female personifications of the nation: a comparative semiotic analysis of Marianne, the Statue of Liberty and Mother Russia

Authors: Markina Lidia Alexeevna, applicant, National Research Mordovia State University, Saransk (Russia)

Keywords: political semiotics; national identity; Marianne; Statue of Liberty; Mother Russia; female allegories; symbolic politics.

In the context of globalization and transformation of national identities, the study of symbolic mechanisms of political community construction acquires particular significance. Female personifications of nations represent a universal phenomenon of political culture requiring comparative semiotic analysis. The aim of this work is to identify common and specific features of three key female national allegories: French Marianne, American Statue of Liberty, and Soviet/Russian Mother Russia. The research is based on iconographic analysis of visual representations (posters, monuments, official symbols) using R. Barthes semiotic methodology, P. Noras concept of memory sites, and theoretical frameworks of M. Warner, M. Agulhon, and N. Yuval-Davis. Comparative and historical-cultural analysis methods were employed. A typology of female national personifications was identified, including revolutionary-militant (Marianne), institutional-inclusive (Statue of Liberty), and maternal-mobilizing (Mother Russia) types. It was established that differences in iconography (headwear, attributes, degree of nudity) reflect the specifics of political cultures and historical experience of respective societies. Comparative analysis demonstrates that female personifications of nations function as polysemantic symbols capable of reinterpretation in changing political contexts. The gendered nature of these allegories is connected with archetypal notions of the nation as territory requiring protection and as a mother giving birth to citizens.
