The political theology of James VI (I) Stuart: an experience of systematic reconstruction

Authors: Trunov Anatoly Anatolyevich, PhD of Philosophical sciences, Associate Professor, Pashetnykh Mikhail Olegovich, Postgraduate student, Belgorod University of Cooperation, Economics and Law, Belgorod

Keywords: political theology; James VI and I Stuart; monarchy; Britain; the Divine Right of kings.

The purpose of the study is to identify the content of the political theology of James VI (I) Stuart, referring to a comparative analysis of primary sources and consideration of the arguments presented in them. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that from the standpoint of anthropological, morphological, hermeneutic and sociocultural approaches, the article carries out a systematic reconstruction of the political theology of James VI (I) Stuart. As a result, it was proved that the political theology of the British monarch was based on three interrelated arguments: theological (justified the sacredness of monarchical power); patriarchal (considered the monarch as the physical and political Father of the fatherland); organic (based on the literal and symbolic analogy of the head and body). The political theology of James VI (I) Stuart became a prominent phenomenon in the intellectual life of Scotland and England in the late XVI – first quarter of the XVII centuries.
