The emotional and motivational components of the students can be decisive for their success or failure in acquiring a new language. The object of this study concerns the influence of psychological and motivational variables in the teaching of Italian L2, taking into account the cultural and linguistic context of Russian students and their perceptions and expectations regarding the Italian language and culture. The purpose is to address the psychological obstacles that hinder the learning of foreign languages and promote the understanding of cultural differences, thus creating a more welcoming educational environment. The scientific novelty lies in examining the subject from different perspectives. The opinions of the Russian students were collected and analyzed, and their practical use was also evaluated. As a result, the positive psychological aspects that helped improve students' performance were described, as well as the emotional issues that represented obstacles and the strategies adopted to address and overcome these difficulties.
