The exclusive use of L2 in teaching Italian as a foreign language in Russian-speaking class
Keywords: Teaching foreign language; exclusive use of the target language L2; Russian students; Italian as foreign language L2; teaching in a foreign country; communicative approach; teach Italian in Russia; monolingual class.
The amount of target language that should be used in foreign language teaching is still a hotly debated topic. The exclusive use of L2 is peacefully accepted when the classes are multilingual, due to the absence of a common language among the students, however, it is less tolerated when the classes are monolingual. The object of this study, it is the observation and field study of Russian monolingual classes, regarding the exclusive use of the L2 during Italian courses and the analysis of the common opinion that Russian students have on the matter. The purpose, is to understand the background and the concrete difficulties, which can generate a sense of frustration in students. The scientific novelty, consists of studying the topic discussed from different angles. The common opinion of Russian students regarding the topic in question was in fact collected and analysed, but its concrete use was also tested in the field. As a result, the study offers some possible proposals to help students overcome the initial mistrust and anxiety that may arise when faced with a new approach.
