This article is an analysis of the main ideas of Alan Gilbert Nixon, a modern sociologist of religion and researcher of the New Atheism movement. The relevance of this study is due to several reasons. Firstly, Nixon proposes to consider the New Atheists movement as a set of social groups united in their desire to strengthen the scientific-materialist view of the world, but differing within the movement in their methodology and strategy of behavior within the framework of criticism of religion in modern society. Secondly, in exploring the nature and motivations of the New Atheism movement in a historical analysis of freethought as a whole, Nixon notes the fact that the mythical view of the "old atheists" allows the new atheists to feel that harsh aggressive nonconformism and intransigence to religion must be innovative tactics the whole movement. Thirdly, in the course of the analysis of the value systems built by the new atheists, the paradoxical desire of the latter is revealed to build a new secular spirituality, formally similar to the religious worldview and expressed in the "natural science charm" of the this-worldly world, in reverence for the harmony of the Universe and the "sacred voice" of scientific knowledge peace.
