The purpose of the study is to examine the role of psychedelia in the American counterculture of the 1960s. By this time in the United States, psychedelic drugs had made their way "onto the street" from the clinic setting. The widespread non-medical use of psychedelics became a feature of youth countercultural movements. In this environment, the belief has taken hold that the mass distribution of psychedelics could solve many social problems. Ideologists and activists of psychedelia believed that the "psychedelic revolution" would first change the consciousness of the majority of society members for the better, and then it would lead to a revolution in society. The article discusses the reasons for the inconsistency of this belief, as well as the failure of the "psychedelic revolution" in general. The scientific novelty consists in the fact that the study traces the connection between the events of the 1960s and modern Western culture. The author concludes that despite the failure of the "psychedelic revolution," psychedelia has anchored itself in popular culture in the form of images. These images were initially generated by psychedelic art and then were borrowed and routinized in the mass consciousness by advertising.
